Tete was one of the most important characters in Tango's modern revival, particularly as it relates to social tango.

He and Maria were on the scene in the late 80s and early 90s, the first couple to be dancing the close embrace (apilado) style of Tango's underground, small, and crowded dance floors during the Military's years ruling Argentina.

At first how they danced was indecipherable to the young generation, and they didn't teach for many years. But in the early 90s when they finally began to see themselves as teachers, and began to share, their style caught on like wildfire, and much to the chagrin of the more formal dancers we now call "open embrace" dancers, became the style danced socially in Buenos Aires. Now, many years later, as tango styling has become evolutions and fusions of the the early revival styles, you can still see Tete's influences.

Tete and Maria broke up in the early 90s. Maria continued to be an influence in BsAs, and found many other elder dancers who became influential in the social community. See Tommy O'Connell here in the Archive.

Tete went on to team up with Silvia Ceriani, and together they had a long teaching career in Argentina and Europe. Tete taught Pina Bausch in Germany.

The videos of Tete and Maria teaching group class and private lessons are rare footage of Tete and Maria at the height of their influence on the revival generation. The videos he made for Daniel with Sylvia was the only time his complete strategy for teaching the close embrace was captured on video. These are unique historical documents!
